Notes and Quotes:
The Blues started off strong this weekend, but struggled in the afternoon pool. We have a tendency to use the first game as a warm up, and if we lose, it takes a much stronger effort to win the next two games. All in all, we had a good tournament. We have become much better defensively, and more consistent offensively. For every time we had a lull, there would be one or two girls that would spark us up. There were many spectacular plays by the Blues this weekend. Bethany Clayton's defense was on fire Sunday. Other stand outs for the weekend were: Jen Davis, middle hitting, blocks, and serving, Raven Northrup, blocking and defense, Mandy Larson & Caitlin Davis, all around. We would also like to thank our two pick up players that have signed up to be there when we are short athletes, Sandra Holtfreter, setter and Kristin Loitved, hitter. They helped out a great deal this weekend.

Notes and Quotes:
The blues had a tough weekend. With only 7 players (5 that were actually healthy!) the blues started to fatigue early. Power League is a lot more demanding physically and mentally than most tournaments, because you are playing teams that have equal skill level as your own. Although we worked hard this weekend, it just didn't end up as we would have liked. The highlight match was against Webfoot. We played them extremely well. The loss was disappointing, but you could definitely see the improvement the blue team has made over the last several weeks. I am proud of the 7 girls that made the commitment to stick it out for each other this weekend. We will be in Kent this weekend, and with a break after that, we should be rested for the next power league.

Notes and Quotes:
This weekend was our up and down weekend.  We couldn't seem to find our groove on the court.  When we were "on", we were unstoppable and fun to watch.  Unfortunately, this weekend our "on" game was not with us that often!  We are not discouraged, however.  We know that all teams face a lapse now and then.  Yakima lies ahead, and we are ready to compete!

Stand outs for the weekend were:  Dana Mackey, serving, Bethany Clayton & Raven Northrup, Defense/serve receive, and Caitlin Davis & Mandy Larson, hitting.

Notes and Quotes:
18's Blue return from Seattle with only one loss on the weekend!!!  Take Fifth!!!

We started off hot on Sunday morning by finishing first in our pool.  We defeated E'mont Explosion 25-13, 25-13, Northshore 20-25, 25-14, 15-10, and Cascade Black 25-17, 25-20.  Our awesome passing on Sunday enabled us to use our middles more.  This in combination with our serving and communication on the court set the tone for the afternoon pool.  We defeated MGVA 25-14, 25-19, and Webfoot Green 25-14, 25-19.  That ended our play for Sunday.   Monday morning we started off at the same level we left on Sunday night.  The blues defeated Northcoast 25-15, 21-25, 15-10.  We were working as a team and no one could stop us, or so it seemed!

The brackets were set up incorrectly by a non-volleyball person, and "to balance out the reffing assignments fairly," the first place team in our pool (us) had to ref, and the second place team received a first round bye!  The tournament director admitted to the error, but to ease confusion, they did not revise it.  We faced Puget Sound Red, and our start was strong.  We won the first match 25-17, and then our game disappeared.  We lost the next two games 11-25, and 9-15.  The kids knew they had not played their best, but since it was double elimination, we were sparked by the thought of making a comeback.  Of course I hadn't examined the brackets thoroughly enough, because based on our play, I saw us in the championship match!  When I read the bracket I couldn't believe my eyes.  We would only have two matches left to play, but if we  won both, the best we could place was fifth!  I knew the biggest obstacle we faced was to have the motivation and the determination to win the next two matches, and not be discouraged by our finish.  The Blue's didn't miss a beat and came out fighting.  We defeated Vancouver Lightning 25-17, 25-22, and Greater Columbia 27-25, 25-22.

We played the best I've seen at this tournament.  Each athlete contributed to our wins.  Our middles, Raven Northrup and Jen Davis were dominating the net both offensively and defensively.  Rachel Braun, Danielle Sweet, and Dana Mackey were serving bullets this weekend.  Dana only missed two serves the entire tournament!  Mandy Larson (aka: pancake queen), Caitlin Davis, and Raven played awesome defense.  Caitlin was also extremely consistent on our right side attack.  Her line shots were key.  Even though we increased our middle attack, Alicia Cooper, and our other three outside hitters, Mandy, Rachel, and Danielle received a majority of the sets.  All of them came through when the ball was in their hands.  I am happy with the way we played this weekend.  The girls grew a great deal at this tournament, and it showed through their play.

By the way, had the switch in the bracket taken place to give us the bye, and the second place team the refereeing assignment, we would have played Greater Columbia in the first round of bracket play!

Notes and Quotes:
The Blue team came into this tournament three players short, with a setter we picked up Thursday night!  I was impressed with our first two pool play games.  Unfortunately, we were mentally and physically exhausted after a tough match against Webfoot Gold.  We struggled to find our rhythm again.  We just weren't able to execute.  When we reached bracket play, we seemed a bit unprepared and took for granted the ability of Salem VBC.  The girls quickly decided that their play was not what it should be and began to change.  Led by a spark from Caitlin Davis, the Blue regained some energy, and won the match.  After the first game with Camas, the official realized that we were only to play to 15, thus the anomaly in the scores for that match.  Again Caitlin helped set the tone on the court.  We did a good job of staying in charge of the last game, and setting the pace for the entire match.  We found out the hard way this weekend the importance of staying in shape during club (if you're not doing another sport).  We ended up taking fifth place, and will remain in the Silver Division for the next Power League Tournament.  Other standouts for the weekend were Raven Northrup, defense,  Sandra Holtfreter, setting, and Jennifer Davis, net play.

Notes and Quotes:
18's Blue win Silver Division at J & J  Classic!

After losing two matches in pool play, one to Mt. Hood, and another to Rose City, the Blue team came back and played strong in braket play.

It took a concentrated team effort to beat Hannula's Angels in the semi's.  We really had to stay focused on our game in order to win.  Beth Clayton came in the second game against the Angels, and didn't miss a beat.  Her passing was on fire.  She also mixed up her attack, which proved to be key to her success.  Our intensity level in the semi's was crucial for the Championship match.

In the final match against the Vancouver Lightening, the Blue's were unstoppable.  Both middles, Raven Northrup and Jen Davis did an outstanding job.  They were getting up quick in the middle to attack, and they had numerous touches on the block, which helped out our defensive game.  Dana Mackey, took charge on the court, and was mixing up our offense wisely.  She was aided by the consistent passing and defense of Catricia Magsayo and Danielle Sweet.  There were some great saves this match.  Their strong passing allowed Dana to utilize our crossing plays designed for our right side attacker, Caitlin Davis.  Both Caitlin and Dana were our top servers for the weekend.  Finally, Alicia Cooper came alive on the outside.  Vancouver could not touch her.  She was hitting over and between the block, and when their defense was expecting the hit, Alicia would out smart them with the tip!  This was a fun match to watch.  The Blue's took control from the start, and never looked back.  The 18's Blue are playing this Saturday at the Vancouver Hoop.
