Notes
and Quotes:
It was another successful tournament for
the Red team. Red began with their
typical slow start in pool, losing 2
quick games to Canby. Then they
came on strong the rest of the day,
defeating MAC Jrs and Forest Grove Ohana
in pool.
In
bracket play, Red took the first match
against a strong Purple team. Then
they got their revenge from the morning
pool by dispatching Canby in 2
games. This put Red in the
Championship Match against MAC
Jrs. Red lost the first game, but
then came back with determination to
take the second game, setting up the 3rd
game. The team fought hard but
came up 2 points shy of taking it all.
It
was a great day for Red because they
kept up their enthusiasm and spirit all
day long. They stayed positive and
focused as a team. Their success
was a total team effort with everyone
stepping up their level of play.
This
was a great team to work with this
season and we still see a lot of
potential to come! It's amazing
how far this inexperienced team came
along. They worked so hard in
practice, had fun with each other as a
team, and always stayed positive with
their teammates. The parents were
awesome, being supportive and patient
all along while realizing our efforts at
developing the girls' talents. It
did happen!
We're
going to miss this group, but we'll be
looking forward to their success in
their volleyball future. Rick and
I wish these girls the best.
Thanks for a great season!

Notes
and Quotes:
Big Red won! The girl's effort was
awesome. They played this tournament
with teamwork and determination.
Red
started out slow against Forest Grove in
a three-team pool. Then they woke up and
played well but dropped the match 3-2
after fighting hard to get back in it.
Then Red romped in a 3-0 win over Salem.
Red was done in pool by 12:30 and then
refereeing and waiting forever until
4:30 to begin bracket play. By the time
Red got to play again the team was ready
and dispatched Cascade Reign easily in
two games. Against Canby in the
Championship game, tiredness took its
toll and Red dropped the first game, but
Red showed a lot of character by digging
deeper and playing through it to get the
win 2-l.
BriAnne
lit it up with her serving all day plus
playing a key role in setting. Kacie had
that determined look in her eye whenever
she went to serve and hit. She also
showed some of that aggressiveness that
setters need. Kalee was all over the
floor turning any pass into a nice set
for the hitters. We always know she's
going to get to that second ball. Sarah
kept us in the first match of the day
with a long string of good serves when
the rest of the team was struggling with
their serves. It's so nice to know you
have a libero who will deliver that nice
pass right on target like Sarah does.
Alyssa and Jenna were all over the net
putting down overpasses and being very
aggressive hitting the ball. What an
improvement from the last tournament.
Liz was given the challenge of playing
all around some games and it was great!
She loved playing defense. When Stefani
plays defense nothing gets past her. Red
can count on her great passes and hustle
to give the team a boost in tough games.
Jessie as always served tough but in
this tournament she hit the ball hard at
outside with many crucial kills. Emily
had another outstanding tournament. She
has total focus on the floor and always
plays with boundless enthusiasm.
Winning
is a great reward for the many hours in
the gym, but another reward is seeing
the improvement this team has made. But
more important is seeing the commitment
the girls made to win as a team, not
individuals. Everyone was important in
Red's success this tournament by doing
their part whenever they were called
upon to do so. Rick and I couldn't be
prouder.

Notes
and Quotes:
Keeping the momentum going from the last
Power League, Red played well enough to
win 2 of 3 matches in their first pool
Saturday to take second. Going to the
top of the division, Red needed to step
up their play in the first pool Sunday.
And wow, did they!! Red started out slow
against Wenatchee Wildfire, the number 1
team, but then started playing
outstanding defense and serving well to
play them tough all the way.
Then
Red played High Desert and played even
better, winning in two games. Everyone
played outstanding volleyball to
contribute to the win. It was by far the
best match Red had ever played. It was
so neat for Rick and I to sit back and
watch Red be aggressive, enthusiastic,
and motivated in a team effort.
After
that, Red lost to a team that was
disorganized and we had trouble
adjusting to that. That put us into a
3-way tie for second, but we ended up
4th after tiebreak points. After that
the girls had trouble getting momentum
going again.
We
are so proud of these girls for their
accomplishments this weekend. They
stayed positive and supportive of each
other throughout the weekend, playing
with determination to get better.
We
are fortunate to have Kalee and Kacie
handling the majority of the setting
with their quickness in getting to every
ball, giving the hitters lots of good
sets. BriAnnne did an awesome job at two
positions, setter and outside, and
played with tremendous energy which gave
the team a boost. Liz continues to be a
valuable hitter and defender at middle
although weakened by a long bout with
illness (coughing fits between each
play). Alyssa showed her tremendous
athletic ability by skying high above
the net to block and hit to holes.
Opposing teams are starting to try to
avoid her in the middle. Jenna made
great strides at understanding the game
and made some key passes at game point
time. Another sick one, Jessie got
aggressive at the net and also made
several key defensive plays. Stefani is
developing into a complete all-around
player, making several kills at the net.
We love having her in serve receive
because we are so confident in her great
passing ability with her super form.
Coming back from a broken finger, Emily
was a consistent hitter all weekend no
matter where the set - she went for it
and was successful. Her serving was
almost 100%. (We should break everyone's
fingers?) Sarah used her head
(literally) all weekend and hardly got a
rest at libero. She was up to the task.
It
was a fun weekend. Lots of volleyball
and camaraderie. Thanks parents for all
you do - you're a great group!

Notes
and Quotes:
Red came ready to play this Saturday,
winning their first match in pool over
Oregon Volleyball Academy in 2 games.
Kacie DeRosier had her serve on fire
with 4 aces and 11 out of 12 serving.
Liz Spears also stepped up, serving 7 of
7 with 4 aces. Jessie King shone on
serve receive with accurate passes to
the setters.
Against
Forest Grove Red started slow but won
the last 2 games to win the match behind
the tough serving of Kalee Parker with 4
aces and 13 of 15 good and Jessie
contributed 6 aces. Alyssa Wistrick put
down some nice tips in the holes.
In
a tough match against Cascade Juniors,
Stefani Hail and Sarah Charette were
doing their all to pass every ball but
our serving went south so we couldn't
pull it out, so Red ended up second in
pool.
In
the first bracket game against North
Coast, Red lost to a team that they
should beat but they got out-hustled on
defense.
Learning
a lesson, Red played their best game of
the day against Cascade Reign. Serving
was great with BriAnne Culbertson
leading the way with 8 aces and 16 of 19
good. She also had some excellent hits
at the net. Passing was super, so Kalee
and Kacie could put up really nice sets
that the hitters hit smart, tipping when
necessary. Kacie and Stefani led serve
receive while Liz had a great all-around
match. Sarah gets better at libero each
tournament with some awesome saves and
passes all day.
If
Red can keep the momentum of this last
match going to Yakima they will have an
awesome tournament next week. Special
thanks to injured Emily Damschen who
took stats and cheered the team all day.

At the Power League tournament, Red
finished third in pool play, putting
together a strong game against Sun City.
All the setters served well in that
match and throughout the day. Red had a
super first game against Nike Attack in
bracket play. The team played together
and in control. They went away from that
and then struggled to eventually lose
that match in three games. Some of the
players stepped up their defensive play
in the tournament and learned how much
fun good defense can be. Our libero / DS
continued to make improvements in her
all around play. So many areas of Red's
game are getting stronger (setting,
hitting, defense) so that when it all
comes together with ball control, trust,
and teamwork, Red will be a tough team
to beat. That will be fun to watch! Keep
working hard BIG RED! |

Notes
and Quotes:
Red started the first two matches really
struggling with serve receive and
serving. Nothing was working but finally
Red focused on that part of their game
to win the third match and end up third
in pool.
Then in bracket play, when the team saw
the importance of pass-set-hit, they did
very well winning the next two matches
and ended up playing for the
championship in the Challenge Division.
Cascade Strike won the final and Red
ended up 16th overall out of 28 teams.
Sarah was the most consistent passer at
libero, giving the setters a nice pass
to set. It was BriAnne's turn to play
when sick and in beating Nike Attack she
served and played with consistency.
Kacie continued to get stronger each
game and ended up with a solid string of
tough serves in the final match. Kalee
played tops all-around, setting, serving
and hitting. She is getting stronger at
the setter position in each tournament.
The outsides, Stefani, Jessie, and Emily
had some good attacks and finished
strong in serving and serve receive.
Jenna improved all around throughout the
tournament. Liz had some super serving
strings in a row at crucial times and
put away some nice kills. Alyssa had
some key serves to put Red over the top
in the Nike Attack game.
Overall the team hustled on defense,
even getting on the floor to make saves,
but they will need to work on keeping
the ball on our side. With practice the
Red team will continue to get better at
each tournament and improvement is our
goal. Good job Red! |

Notes
and Quotes:
Red started slow in the first pool. They
dropped two matches before they came to
life and got excited about playing. And
then they played their best volleyball
ever in defeating Webfoot Silver easily
to gain a 3-way tie for second place in
their pool. In the playoff round Red
ended up third. Then they came out
determined in the second pool and easily
put away the competition including one
team that they had lost to earlier. That
shows the progress the Red team made
during the day. They learned the
importance of setting up the hitters and
getting to celebrate kills. They are
seeing the importance of control,
communication, and teamwork. The defense
looked better but it is still an area
that will need work, but with the hard
work the girls put in at practice they
will soon be controlling whatever the
other team throws at them.
Alyssa Wistrick showed a ton of
improvement in all areas of her game,
especially tipping to the holes and
serving consistently. Stefani Hail made
some outstanding defensive saves during
the day. Emily Damschen worked really
hard on defense also and passed up some
nice balls to the setters. She was
having a good time hitting the ball down
for a lot of kills. Kudos to Kalee
Parker recovering from the flu and
putting in a super effort to give it all
for the team. BriAnne Culbertson made
positive contributions in her serving
and positive vocal attitude. Kacie
DeRosier also was on with her serve and
actually smiled and looked like she was
having fun out there. All the setters
responded when the coaches asked them to
take control and put up a hittable set
at every opportunity. Harder than it
sounds. Jenna Sitton is getting more
comfortable on the court and with some
practice on skills she will be ready to
be a great middle. Jessie always enjoys
the clutch serving role and did it again
today serving a tremendous amount of
aces and reading defenses better. Sarah
is a key to our defense and during the
tournament she kept getting bolder at
calling all the free balls. Liz Spears
is a player who is always valuable on
the court because she does everything
great and is enthusiastic and a super
team player.
It is exciting for Rick and I to see the
progress the girls make at each
tournament. We expect a lot and the
girls are responding to play at a higher
level each match. Great job Red! |

Cowlitz Red played Eastwind first and
showed how they continue to improve with
each game. Kalee Parker and Kacie
DeRosier worked well together and
hustled aggressively for each second
ball. Red picked up their serving
overall with some nice aces by Stefani
Hail to defeat Starling Silver in the
second match. BriAnne Culbertson stepped
in to set well. Jenna Sitton passed
awesomely in the back row. Against
Forest Grove, Alyssa Wistrick had some
great hits at the net. She will be a
force at the net with more work. Sarah
Charette played Libero in the first game
which contributed to our win in that
game. Playing a tough Canby team, Red
came from behind in the first game to
win behind the all-around play of Liz
Spears. Jessie King got her tough serve
going and put away several aces. In the
second game, Red was behind 16-23 and
Kalee's clutch serving pulled Red back
to win the game. The whole team pulled
together in that win, showing the
competitiveness to win games. Against
Starling Blue, Emily Damschen, playing
in a new position, got comfortable there
and hustled all over on defense. She
will definitely be an asset at the
outside hitter position. Red couldn't
pull out that match so they ended up in
a 3-way tie for first. It was settled by
points which put Red in third overall.
Soooo close!
Rick and I are very pleased and excited
by how much the team improved on focus
and hustle. Red is on the way! |

Notes

I am so proud of the girls for the good
things that they did this weekend. Rick
and I had given them so much to think
about and remember that it was confusing
at times but even with that they were
right there competing in every match. We
just needed a little more push and we
could have won every match. Everyone
contributed to a total team effort.
Sarah Charette came in as Libero,
defensive specialist, and even played
some middle blocker. She was all over
the court passing balls. Our 3 setters,
Kacie DeRosier, Emily Damschen, and
Kalee Parker put up nice sets and worked
hard trying to get every second ball all
day. They were tired. Liz Spears had
some nice hits at middle blocker and
Jenna Sitton and Alyssa Wistrick began
to put up an imposing block. Stephanie
Hail passed exceptionally well and with
outside hitters BriAnne Culbertson and
Jessie King got some kills at the net.
Jessie was impressive in serving,
bringing us back and getting ahead in
several games. This team can't help but
get better each week with all the
outstanding athletes on the team. Watch
out for RED in the future! |
