Notes
and Quotes:
These ladies are AMAZING!!! I just kept
thinking to myself and sometimes
out-loud, "my goodness, you're a
bunch or 8th graders". Cowlitz 14
Black was seeded 15th out of 36 teams at
an Adidas Series tournament in Bellevue
this past weekend. Though the level of
play does diminish somewhat up north,
the teams still put up good competition
against us. Pool play was pretty easy -
we worked hard on our plays, running our
ones faster as we got more comfortable.
Everybody on the team got at least 1
kill, including our DS's: Sarah Charette
- 4 kills, Morgan Worth - 1 kill, and
Chelsie Barnes - 2 kills. Our setters
Anne and Kalee were excellent leaders. I
was pushing both of them pretty hard at
the end of the day to continue to lead
and make good play decisions and to lead
their hitters and they did just that -
sometimes with words and sometimes with
good play selection. Shyra Hoffman
started off strong with 6 Aces, 6 kills,
3 Blocks and excellent free ball
passing. She later had to leave because
she strained a muscle in her arm (no one
knew it was hurting her to serve those
ACES). Jill Jagelski stepped into the
middle and dominated. Her ability to
change her game as an outside hitter to
the middle is amazing for such a young
player. She had 16 kills, 10 blocks, and
3 Aces. Our outside hitters BriEnne and
Emily played very well, hitting the line
and tipping open shots without being
asked, seizing the opportunity and
seeing the open court. Alyssa Wistrick
did her typical domination-show on the
net. She had a pretty good cold setting
in and was sneezing while she was
playing, but it seemed to give her more
power. She was fading in energy toward
the end of the day but her play never
suffered - she was placing shots instead
of using her power, which showed much
maturity in her play. We were injured,
sick, and they had a coach that was
LOOPY with lack of oxygen to the brain
due to asthma problems and sleep loss,
and yet competing and winning was what
they wanted. Their goal was to send the
16-year-olds home. A few of the girls
got teary when they sent their first
team home. From joy, they were so proud
of themselves. I actually got a little
teary myself when I was telling them how
proud I was of their efforts. For a
bunch of 8th graders, they're pretty fun
to watch. Hey girls, thanks for taking
care of me Sunday.
AMAZING
PLAY LADIES !!!!!

Notes
and Quotes:
At the April Power League, we started
off with PVC Red - that is one team we
struggle to get by. Well .... we fell
short again, but not without giving it
our all. We took them to three as usual
and had the game, then due to missed
serves we gave it back to them at the
end. This was the best the ladies have
played so far. They just keep playing
better and better. We really step up to
play the tougher teams. The next match
was Nike Power, who we usually beat but
fell short this match. We were
completely out of steam. PVC takes a lot
of physical and mental ability from us
and we were not on our game for Nike
Power. Yakima was a different story. We
really took to them, finishing in two
games. Everyone was on top of their game
again. Our serving was on, our passes
were perfect, the setters were making
good choices, and the hitters were
executing. This teams works better
together every tournament. I don't know
if they realize the potential they have.
They are truly a joy to coach and I am
very pleased with their efforts so far.
Thanks
ladies for being such a hard working
group.

Notes

The ladies attended the Wilsonville
invitational. The competition level was
a little below what we tend to see at
Power League, which made the girls
motivate themselves and work on plays in
the game situation. Everyone played
well. Sara Charette, who is our libero,
played left back defense which gave her
the opportunity to serve. She was 100%
serving. The girls won every match and
deserved to be the tournament champions.

Notes
and Quotes:
Pool play proved to be a tough
challenge. We definitely were in the
Power Pool with Rose City Ohana,
Roseburg, and PVC Red. We started off a
little cold against Rose City, not
playing our best match but making it
respectable. We were a little warmer
against Roseburg - still working out
some kinks. We had goals to only run
ones in the middle and break our habit
of consistently setting high two's (
which have become too comfortable). It
took us some time to make that happen -
our passing had to improve and our
setters had to become more aggressive
and the hitters had to really listen to
the setter's commands. I was very
pleased at their efforts and you could
see the ladies pushing themselves
against Roseburg to get these things
done. The game was a little tighter than
it should have been, but when the ladies
got into their rhythm, it was all over.
Our last pool play match was against PVC
Red. What a match: 25-16 Cowlitz, 23-25
PVC Red, and 13-15 PVC Red. It was
pretty big for both teams. The winner
took 2nd in the pool. Everyone served
well the first two games, passed well,
and communicated which is usually our
weakest link but became our strongest
for that match. Our six missed serves
hurt us in the third game or it was
ours. The loss put us in the bottom
bracket for 5th through 8th, and we
placed 5th overall. Our efforts as a
team were tremendous, and our setter
Kalee Parker was truly a leader against
PVC and for the day. Her skills as a
setter and leader were the best she's
shown yet. I always have a player of the
tournament and I have selected the whole
team with special recognition to Kalee
Parker for giving us some much needed
leadership on the court.
Excellent
job ladies!

Notes
and Quotes:
Central Catholic proved to be our best
play yet this season. We placed first in
our pool, which put us second overall in
bracket play. We made it to the finals
against Rose City Ohana. We outplayed
them the first game - tipping, hitting,
serving - playing hard and well. The
second and third game we did not let up
but the Rose City team tipped themselves
a win. We could not adjust to the
tipping. Needless to say, we will be
working on that Tuesday at practice.
This
team works so well together they are
constantly amazing me. We played 3
different lineups - some were stronger
than others but they made every one of
them work to our advantage. I had to mix
the lineup because some ladies were off
in the morning, then got their game back
later in the day. Our setters Kalee and
Anne played well all day and made a huge
difference in our attacks. They had a
plan every possession and ran plays
whether we were ahead or trailing. They
showed much more confidence in their
demeanor on the court. We still have an
injured middle - Alyssa Wistrick - she
had limited playing time but was
effective when she was on the court. We
were glad to have Brienne back from
Texas - she had an amazing serving day
and figured out where to be on the court
for defense. Chelsie and Morgan were
strong on defense as they always are -
they are dependable players and are the
key to our success. Emily Damschen
played both right and left-side at the
net and showed control and wise
decision-making. Jill and Shyra had a
great day - they were both hot for our
championship game against Rose City
Ohana. They shut their middles
down the first game. Elizabeth Spears
had a super day on the right side
getting 5 kills for the day. Sarah
Charette was our player of the day. This
kid is amazing - she plays 110% all day
long. Her hustle and leadership
abilities are a gift and I expect to see
great play from this gifted DS.
Fantastic
job ladies - let's keep it UP UP UP!!!

Notes
and Quotes:
Cowlitz Black started off like a
lightning bolt and ended with a slow
simmer. Our morning pool play was
unstoppable. The girls were serving
bullets and passing like there was no
tomorrow. The ladies won all their pool
play matches in two games. We were
hitting and playing defense and running
plays. The girls looked like they had
played together for months. We had an
outstanding morning, ending up first in
pool play.
The
second pool play started off with a win
over PVC Green, and they were up to the
challenge. Our hitters Jill, Liz,
Brienne and Emily were consistently
finding holes in the defense. They all
worked hard all day. Our middles Alyssa
and Shyra were unstoppable when they
hit. They loved to just pound the ball.
The setters were in all day and did a
great job trying to run plays and
knowing what to do next. Anne and Kalee
are hard workers and we expect to see a
lot more amazing sets while the season
progresses. Now let me tell you about
our DS's - they were unbelievable.
Chelsie came into her own; she was on
the 10 foot line digging up all the
trash from the other teams. It was
amazing to see her move. Sarah ran the
back court like one one else could; she
was there picking up everything. She had
a great day. Then we had Morgan, who was
ready to put out her best all the time;
she was ready at any point to go out on
the court and give it her all.
GREAT
JOB LADIES!!!!

Notes
and Quotes:
The Central Catholic tournament was an
interesting format and a very long day
which I hope will get us ready for our
Power League Qualifier. This group of
girls continue to amaze me. We honestly
did not play real well but still ended
up second overall. We dug ourselves a
hole then climbed right out of it. We
tend to, like many teams, play down to a
weaker opponent. We definitely learned
the importance of setting the tempo at
the end of the day. These ladies are
truly going to be a force in the 14's
division.
In
our first match, we were short some
players so we had to do some revising of
our line-up . Jill Jagelski stepped into
our middle blocker position during our
first match and did a magnificent job.
Chelsie Barnes had to do the same in the
outside hitting position. It truly said
a lot for this team's depth to be able
to switch positions with no practice in
those spots whatsoever. Sarah Charette
played strong defensively. Anne Demme
was our serving machine and definitely
led the team with the most points scored
off a serve. Kaylee Parker improved a
great deal from the last tournament; the
confidence in her play really showed.
Morgan Worth had an incredible defensive
match against Rose City Purple. Brienne
Duvauchelle had a great day all-around
and killed other teams with her
beautiful short serve. Liz Spears played
hard on the right side and is always a
leader on and off the court. Alyssa
Wistrick and Shyra Hoffman were the
players of the day; they both played
tough on the net and were great passing
defensively. These two ladies got us
through some tense moments on the court.
Great job ladies and let's continue the
great work.

Notes
and Quotes:
Wow, what a team!! Cowlitz Black should
prove to be a force this year in the
14's division. This team is stacked with
talent and have a strong will to win.
Our goal for the day was not to win but
to get our rotation down, get to know
each other on the court, and to run a
three-man serve receive. The girls did
this so well I couldn't have asked for
more from them. These girls at times
played as if they've been with each
other for years. They showed incredible
composure and sophistication on the
court. Many times we took a ball that
looked for sure that it was going to be
a dead ball and sent it over the net for
a kill or a side out.
Anne
Demme and Kalee Parker ran the offense
very well - both girls were effective
all day. Middles Shyra Hoffman and
Alyssa Wistrick were definitely forces
on the net. They should be a dominant
force on this team and in our league.
They are both learning a quicker attack
and to hit more than the middle school 6
foot middle set that we so often see. My
outside hitters Emily Damschen, Brienne
Duvauchelle, and Jill Jageleski all
worked hard seeing the open line shot
and tipping the open holes when asked.
Liz Spears, our right-side hitter, did
an outstanding job on the net - her best
kill of the day was an outstanding smash
out of the middle transitioning out of
serve receive. Defensive specialists
Morgan Worth and Chelsie Barnes were
exceptional on the floor. The made the
most out of free balls and picked up a
lot of slop balls thrown at us. They did
a great job anticipating what was coming
their way. Sara Charette, our Libero,
was the outstanding player of the day.
We would not have got through that day
without her. She is clearly a leader and
her role will be essential to our
success.
All
day people were coming up to me and
complimenting me on this well
disciplined team on and off the court. I
have to say I've been blessed with an
amazing group of young ladies. Great job
girls!!
