Notes
and Quotes:
The 14's Black successfully defended
it's title at the Emerald City Classic
this past weekend. All players had a
significant impact on our success during
this two day tournament. Sara Peterson
spent the time in a Libero uniform this
weekend for the first time and was
instrumental in giving our middle
blockers some relief in the back row.
Hillary Mussman found double duty also
for the first time this season with both
setting and hitting right side for us
and when she found the her range earned
some key points, and as is usual
displayed outstanding hustle to chase
down the sometimes errant pass. Kelsey
DeLaGrange continues to deliver a varied
attack with both her setting and also
her powerful attack from the right side.
Laura Jensen adds significantly to our
attack with her consistent "change
of pace" serve and her ability to
direct her hitting to the open area of
the court. Kara Van Zanten used both her
powerful hitting, wide ranging back
court defense and very accurate serving
to help our cause this weekend. Kaitlyn
Senn was very effective hitting and
passing all weekend and finally got her
serve to work effectively in our
championship match. Jonelle Davis
brought a powerful hit with her this
weekend to add to her effective blocking
and was very productive for us this
weekend. Tasia Trochim had another
"did you see that" kind of
tournament with some powerful middle
hits and well placed tips and very
accurate serving and closed out our
championship with a crushing blow that
left no doubt to the conclusion. |

Notes
and Quotes:
We were in action this past weekend
(April 22, 2001) at the Rose City
Invitational, Central Catholic High
School in Portland, Oregon. The morning
pool play began with Eastside 25-8
25-19, then Cascade Jr. Excel 25-10
25-15 and pool play closed out with PIL
Starlings 25-9 25-17. Both defensive
specialists (Sara and Tara) saw front
row action in this last pool play match
and both registered kills. Our semi
final was against Mt. Hood Black and we
advanced to the final with a 25-18 25-11
victory. Passing was the key to this
semi final victory. The Championship
final was against rival Rose City Black.
This was the hardest we had to play all
day and it was quite the hard fought
match. Rose City took game one in a
walk, 15-25. We just could not get
anything going. Game two was a complete
reversal with Cowlitz taking it 25-18.
Solid serving and great defense sparked
this change of fortunes. Game three was
in our control for most of the game; we
had a 14-9 lead and were serving for the
win, but Rose City mounted a charge and
tied the game at 14 and again at 15. But
this was Cowlitz's day for the victory,
prevailing in this contest 17-15. Timely
serving by Jonelle Davis and passing by
Laura Jensen were keys to the last two
points of the match. It took us a game
to pick up the intensity level to match
our opponent's. When we do pick up our
level of play, we are very hard to beat.
Kelsey DeLaGrange led us on the day with
26 kills. Tasia Trochim had a good day
with 60/63 serves with 4 aces, 14 kills
and 8 blocks. Kara VanZanten also had a
good day with 24 kills and 3 blocks.
Kaitlyn Senn had 10 kills. Laura Jensen
had 11 kills. Rashelle Davenport had 12
kills and 3 blocks while Jonelle Davis
had 8 kills and 6 blocks. Both Kelsey
and Hillary Mussman continue to amaze me
with how well they run the offense and
how well they lead on and off the court.
Tara Thomas and Sara Peterson are still
two of the best Defensive specialists in
the region and showed their hitting
powers to us today as well.
We will be involved with the two day
Regional Championships this weekend in
Redmond, Oregon. |

Notes
and Quotes:
Our level of play was much improved for
this Power League. We exacted our
revenge on Nike Power in the first match
of pool play after last month's loss to
them. Suffered a tough loss to PVC Red,
but played well, just not our
"A" game. Then beat a much
improved Eastside. The Champ semi-final
against Rose City was a hard fought
battle with Rose City prevailing this
time. The third place final was also
well played and found us winning the
third game 15-2. Not having to ref the
next match was a HUGE motivator.
Hillary and Kelsey continue to run the
offense very well with Kelsey also
contributing 16 kills on the day. Tasia
served 53/56 with 16 kills and 3 blocks.
Kara was 26/28 serving with 19 kills and
2 blocks. Jonelle served well and had 6
kills and 2 blocks. Rashelle also served
well with 9 kills and 2 blocks. Laura
was 31/32 serving with 5 kills and
really stepped up her defense in the
afternoon. Both Tara and Sara were very
active on their defense, increasing the
amount of court they can cover with each
match. As the players continue to
improve during the season, I am really
looking forward to the next two
tournaments together. Regionals are just
around the corner. |

Notes
and Quotes:
This was not our best outing of the
year. At least we were able to stay in
the Gold Division. Our day was not
without highlights, though. We are
serving tough to the correct areas,
which is getting us a few aces but also
causing our opponents to operate out of
their system. Our passing has continued
to improve. The setters are continuing
to improve and nobody questions their
effort to get to their ball. Our
blocking is becoming more of a factor in
our defense with each tournament. Our
offense is not very fancy but it is very
effective. Kaitlyn Senn led us in kills
with 20 (8 in the last match), Kara
VanZanten had 16 kills, Kelsey
DeLaGrange and Tasia Trochim had 15
kills apiece. We used Tara Thomas as a
Libero for the first time this season,
and she was very effective.
If we had to stumble somewhere in the
season, this was probably a good time.
We stayed in the Gold Division and maybe
in our next outing we will be focused
again. We are still 41-5 for the season,
and proud of our accomplishments so far. |

Notes
and Quotes:
The players continue to improve during
the season. Our backcourt defense is
steadily improving and we are beginning
to add an effective block. This weekends
tournament had many highlights, not the
least of which were the outstanding
hustle of Hillary Mussman (who made a
save from the bleachers then landed with
her jaw on the bleachers, got back up
and made the next play to get the ball
back into play) The blocking of both
Tasia Trochim and Jonelle Davis. The
many kills from Rashelle Davenport, Kara
VanZanten and Kaitlyn Senn. The improved
level of play on Sunday by Laura Jensen.
The all around athleticism and court
awareness of Kelsey DeLaGrange. And of
course the back court defense of Tara
Thomas and Sara Peterson. |

Notes
and Quotes:
Teamwork
and revenge were the keys for today’s
success. Revenge was for losing to
Rose City last week and to Nike A/E in
pool play today. Both losses were
avenged by solid play by the 14’s
Black during today’s Power League
Tournament. Led by the solid play
of Tasia Trochim and Kelsey DeLaGrange
and the improved level of play by
Kaitlyn Senn and Jonelle Davis, The
Athlete’s Corner Black Team was able
to win the Gold Division this
Sunday. Also contributing with a
significant effort today were Hillary
Mussman (outstanding hustle and desire),
Rashelle Davenport (devastating right
side hitting and accurate serves), Kara
VanZanten (solid left side hitting and
serving) Laura Jensen (improved left
side hitting) and our outstanding
defensive specialists Tara Thomas and
Sara Peterson.

Notes
and Quotes:
The
14's Black team was in action in Seattle
at the Buzzard's Breath Junior
Volleyball Tournament at Highline
Community College on Sunday February 11.
Our
main competition for the day ended up
being our 14's Blue team in the finals.
The
team performed very well all day.
We were led on the court by the
consistently high level of effort of our
setters, Kelsey DeLaGrange and Hillary
Mussman. Rashelle Davenport is
developing nicely as a right side hitter
and blocker.
All three outside hitters, Kara
VanZanten, Kaitlyn Senn and Laura
Jensen, are getting the idea to start
their approach OUTSIDE the sideline.
(Kaitlyn can tell you what
happens in a cramped gym and you try to
get too far outside)
Our middles, Tasia Trochim and
Jonelle Davis, are learning to speed up
the offense as we work with the setters
on quick sets. Tasia hit a rocket
shot at the end of our match with the
Blue's to put an exclamation point on
our weekend
championship!
Our defensive specialists, Sara
Peterson and Tara Thomas continue to
serve and pass with the best around and
continue to contribute to our success.
The players looked great in their
Championship T Shirts at the conclusion
of the tournament. |
