Notes
and Quotes:
The
12 Blues have come so far. The team
started the season with losing the first
12 games they played. They finished
barely losing to the two Silver teams in
their pool at Regionals and finishing
3rd in the Bronze Division. What an
improvement from the start.
All
the players served overhand in the
tournament for the first time and were
not only accurate but very effective. In
particular serving well were Danielle
Nevers, Courtney Timmons, Louisa Hanson,
Bianca Vasquez, Meredith Kretzler,
Rachel Morrow, and Anastasia Messmore.
Running
the 4-2 International offense were the
setters Bianca, Anastasia, Meredith, and
Abby Gorton.
Passing
the ball with accuracy were Laurel
Cadotte, Courtney, Louisa, and
Anastasia.
The
team played exceptional in the morning
but reverted back to bump over the net
ball against Athena Blue and thus had
very few attacks. However, the team
certainly finished the season playing a
good brand of ball for longer periods of
time.

Notes
and Quotes:
Last
Saturday, April 3rd, 12 Blue played at
The Hoop in Vancouver in the Bronze
Division. Having never finished higher
than 3rd in a pool to win their pool and
to finish 3rd in the tournament was real
exciting. All nine team members in
attendance played key roles for the team
and displayed several successful attacks
established by sharp passing.
Playing
a 4-2 International for the first time
the team was led by the setting of Abby
Gorton and Bianca Vazquez, the passing
and hitting of Louisa Hanson, the
all-around play of Courtney Timmons,
Laurel Cadotte, Rachel Morrow, and
Kalena Mawae, and the serving of Jill
Radcliffe and Briana Hogue.
During
the day the team served 80% and were led
percentage-wise by Briana again with 96%
serving and Jill with 84% serving. Also,
having key serving at different times
were Kalena, Louisa, and Bianca.

Notes
and Quotes:
The
team started out slowly against
Tillamook, serving only 71% for the
match and not calling the ball or moving
their feet very well; maybe we weren't
awake yet. Then after a two hour break
the team caught fire with the 11 playing
serving 93% against the #l seed Greater
Columbia in two exciting games 25-23 and
26-24. We then lost in 3 games to
Athena. The team almost finished 2nd in
pool play but Greater Columbia came from
behind to defeat Tillamook and in a
tie-breaker we were placed 4th. In pool
play, we split and thus finished 9th in
the tournament
The
team continues to improve all the time.
There is a conscious effort by some to
pass the ball to the setter and Rachel
Morrow, Louisa Hanson, and Courtney
Timmons all had successful attacks.
Having a good passing day were Laurel
Cadotte, Abby Gorton, and Jill Radcliffe.
Several players had good serving days
including Jill, Bianca Vazquez,
Anastasia Messmore, and Kalena Mawae.
Three players had an outstanding serving
day by serving 90% or better. Those
three were Brianna Hogue at 95%, Abby
Gorton at 94% and Danielle Nevers at
90%.

Playing
their best ball of the year, 12 Blue
finished the Yakima Festival by winning
their bracket and T-shirts as mementos.
Defeating Oly Express II 25-22 sent the
team into the Winners Bracket where they
beat Sudden Impact 25-23, 22-25, and
15-10.
All
the players contributed to the
championship. Abby Gorton made several
good passes, Rachel Morrow returned an
opponent's pass for the match point,
Danielle Nevers and Merideth Kretzler
played a good all-around game and
Courtney Timmons, Anastasia Messmore,
Kalena Mawae, Laurel Cadotte, Louisa
Hanson, and Brianna Hogue all served
several key points. Brianna led the
serving percentage with an impressive
47/52 for 90%.

Notes
and Quotes:
The
team continues to make giant strides in
trying to do the right things. We were
very impressive at times in our
attempting to actually use three hits
and not just put the ball in play. The
team is really trying! Our team is doing
better at calling the ball and moving
our feet but those skills seem to leave
us at times causing us to not play
consistently at a solid level. But we
are doing the right things longer
periods of time. Our serving continues
to be solid; we served 83% for the day
as a team.
Having
a solid serving day were Laurel Caddotte,
Briana Hogue, Courtney Timmons, Rachel
Morrow, and Bianca Vasquez. Having a
solid passing day were Jill Radcliffe,
Kalena Mawae, and Abby Gorton. Three
individuals that stood out for their
all-around play and attempting to set it
up and attack were Danielle Nevers,
Merideth Kretzler and Louisa Hanson.

Notes
and Quotes:
The
two main goals for the day were to serve
75% for the day and to call every ball.
The team served 77% for the day but of
course did not call every ball. However,
the team did call the ball much better
and at times did an excellent job which
of course resulted in much better
passing and victories.
Serving
80% or better for the day were Laurel
Cadotte, Louisa Hanson, Briana Hogue,
Meredith Kretzler, Rachel Morrow, and
the leader Bianca Vazquez serving 96%
for the day.
Other
highlights for the day included Danielle
Nevers serving 10 for 10 in the 25-23
victory over Nike NW Jrs, Kalena Mawae
serving two overhand serves in, Jill
Radcliffe serving 5 straight points,
Abby Gorton getting 4 serves in,
Anastasia Messmore sliding on the floor
to save several balls, and the
consistent overall play of Courtney
Timmons which included chasing down her
teammates bad passes and passing the
ball back into the court.
The
team is definitely improving and is
slowly starting to try and pass the ball
to the setter and think about hitting
the ball.

Notes
and Quotes:
After
losing their two morning pool matches to
powerhouses Nike Elite and MAC Jrs., the
team advanced to the Bronze Division of
pool play in the afternoon. Against
Tillamook the Blues trailed 12 -0 before
Briana Hogue took charge. In her first
serving opportunity she served 3 out of
4 in, the second time through 14
straight serves to tie the score at
23-23. Kalena Mawae served an ace for
the victory. Others playing in that
victory were Abby Gorton, Anastasia
Messmore, Rachel Morrow and Laurel
Cadotte.
The
team continues to improve and works
hard. Playing with good court awareness
are Jill Radcliffe, Courtney Timmons and
Meridith Kretzler. Having a great day at
serving besides Briana were Danielle
Nevers 12 for 14 and 100% servers Bianca
Vasquez 15 for 15 and Louisa Hanson 10
for 10.
We
have been emphasizing serving and placed
a team goal of 60% for the day.
Assistant Coach Paul Batzle challenged
them by claiming he would bake them
cookies if we served at least 60% for
the day. The cookies will taste real
good! We need a higher goal. We served
80% for the day.
In
other games, we lost to Wilsonville and
Roseburg but not without a challenge.

Notes
and Quotes:
The
Cowlitz 12 Blues opened the 2004 season
by entering the Preseason Tournament in
Longview. In pool play, the team played
Alpine Black and Nike NW Jrs. Power from
the Portland area and in bracket play
lost two close games to Cowlitz Black
20-25 and 25-27.
Most
of the Cowlitz Blue team members are
inexperienced players but are learning
quickly and certainly improved through
the day against much more experienced
teams. Those playing were: From Castle
Rock, Briana Hogue and Danielle Nevers.
From Kelso, Kalena Mawae and Jill
Radcliffe. From Longview, Laurel Cadotte,
Meredith Kretzler, Rachel Morrow, and
Bianca Vazquez. From Morton, Louisa
Hanson. From Toledo, Anastasia Messmore.
From Toutle Lake, Abby Gorton. and from
Vader, Courtney Timmons.
