Notes
and Quotes:
We started the day having to move
players around due to Rebecca Haight's
unfortunate absence due to illness and
if that wasn't enough, we had to deal
with some of the players that did play
being sick.
Pool
play competition was very close. We
played well against O'Hana and Mt. Hood
but couldn't get the jump on Inner City
Jrs. It sure felt good to win in the tie
breaker against Mt. Hood! Then in
bracket play we battled to the very end
against Salem as the scores indicated.
Unfortunately, we couldn't get past one
of Salem's very tough servers at the end
of the tie breaker game, and lost a
heart breaker. The entire team performed
very well and even though we would have
liked to finish a little higher in the
standings, our Cowlitz 12's Blue players
can hold their heads high and feel very
proud of the strides they made
throughout the season. During the last 3
weeks of the season they not only
learned how to transition from base
defense, but also worked on serving to
areas. Not bad for a team that started
at the bottom of the Silver Division,
eh? And let's not forget we made our way
into the Gold Division for April's power
league! We may have sacrificed some
points as we neared the end of our
season because we added higher level
skills into our game plan, but these
girls have learned more about the game
than most of the teams we played against
and they will be better for it next
year. It was SO EXCITING to watch our
team successfully move from defense to
offense and back again AND some players
even accomplished hitting serving areas.
Allison and Sharol did a major HIGH-5
after a couple of these wonderful
events. During this season-ending
tournament the girls put together all
they had learned to make it a very
competitive outing.

Notes
and Quotes:
The team got a taste of the competitive
level in the Gold Division and it proved
to be quite a challenge. Even though we
struggled with serve receive due to the
stronger serving ability of our
opponents and had trouble gaining team
momentum to turn the scores around, the
team can be proud of the fact that they
toughed it out. We worked on learning
transition (which we had only learned 2
practices ago!) Transition is something
all teams strive to perfect and this
young team will be heads above the rest
since they are getting an early start by
learning it during their very first year
in the sport. Even though it was quite
confusing at first, our 12's Blue team
kept working at it and by the end of the
day, we were much more successful at
moving into base position.
We
will enter Regionals on April 28th in
2nd place, Silver Division, and would
love to finish the season in 1st place!
Hard to believe the season is coming to
an end already. This group of young
ladies have learned a tremendous amount
about the game of volleyball and have
come from the bottom of the 12's
division to playing in the Gold
Division. AWESOME. Go 12's Blue......

Notes
and Quotes:
The youngest of the Cowlitz Volleyball
Club teams (12's BLUE) played with lots
of heart and effort at their 1st ever
2-day tournament last weekend in Yakima.
We played with only eight players and
had to make adjustments by placing
players in unfamiliar positions which
isn't easy even at the highest level.
Considering that at the practice before
Yakima, our middle hitters (Alicia Londo
and Karee Lappe) learned how to switch
into the middle position and Kari Toms
worked on her setting to give Alisha
Bruce-Thiery a break from running a 5-1
so we could have the option to run a
6-2, we did very well. Then when Karee
wasn't able to participate in the
tourney, Rebecca Haight filled in at
middle front without ever practicing it
and she did an admirable job.
Even
though the team came out of the first
pool on Saturday in third place, they
played hard and gave 100%. We had some
close matches and only struggled when
confronted with an opponent who could
serve bullets.
On
Sunday morning, we were placed in a
3-team pool and had to play the best 3
out of 5 games per match which is
exhausting, and of course both matches
(against Tri-City Flame and Oly-Extreme)
went to tie-breakers. Once again we were
nudged out of a higher finish and came
away with 3rd place. The first game in
our bracket match against Kent Jrs. went
into overtime, and we ended up losing
29-31 (wow, what a well fought battle
that was), then we won 25-20, but
dropped the tie-breaker 11-15.
This
was a great opportunity for all of the
girls to get a lot of playing time to
improve their skills and team work with
everyone contributing at different
opportunities. Alisha Bruce-Thiery did a
wonderful job setting and saving the
ball (she even got to be a front row
hitter for a change); Alicia Londo
attacked the ball at the net, blocked
and served well while cheering her
teammates on; Cayden Gaston didn't get
much of a chance to rest the whole
tourney but came into every game with a
wonderful uplifting attitude and helped
the team with her defensive play; Katie
Sarysz adjusted well from playing just
front row to playing all around and when
forced to change her serving technique,
she didn't give up but went out onto the
court and made the adjustment which
isn't easy to do; Rebecca Haight stepped
up to the plate and took on the job of
middle blocker without ever having
played that position and came through
with flying colors - she also provided
some much needed points from her serves;
Paige Kehrli made some excellent diving
saves which kept us in the game, and she
improved her game with playing time in
front and back row; Marnee Clancy made a
college-type dig on a hard-driving ball
(Allison admits it would have been a
difficult ball for even Allison to get
to) - Marnee also served some great low
hard-driven serves for aces; Kari Toms
has beautiful setting hands and got some
opportunities to prove it with sets that
resulted in assists.
As
is true with this game, if you can serve
and serve receive well, you pretty much
have it made. We're going to keep
working on improving those two skills to
be ready for the GOLD DIVISION at power
league in April.
Terrific
job, team. Keep up the good work and
great attitudes.

Notes
and Quotes:
March Power League at Hudson's Bay was
our most successful tournament yet. 12's
Blue started the day in 5th place in
Silver Division. Pool play was VERY
exciting as the scores show: Canby
(25-20; 19-25; 11-15) PVC (24-26; 19-25)
Salem (25-16; 25-20). At the end of pool
play we were in a 3-way tie for 2nd
place and guess what, we won both
tie-breaker games: Salem (15-11) PVC
(15-13). Second in our pool was sweet,
but that wasn't good enough for this
team. In bracket play we took on O'Hana
and WON in another tie-breaker (24-26;
25-21; 15-9), which set us up for the
match to determine 1st or 2nd place. Our
parents can take some of the credit for
our win against Webfoot Jrs. (25-19;
25-10) which put us in 1st place because
they ALL promised the girls a set of
lines at our next practice if we won!!!
Hey, parents . . . don't forget your
tennis shoes on Tuesday!!!
Obviously
everyone played well to contribute to
our success. The credits go to Cayden
Gaston (incredible diving saves, staying
low on defense, good serves and
consistently calling the ball); Katie
Sarysz (fabulous serving percentage,
improving talking and passing); Alisha
Bruce-Thiery (numerous saves out of the
net, great sets and tons of good
serves); Paige Kehrli (kill serves, some
nice saves and terrific enthusiasm);
Karee Lappe (strong front row play,
better passing and strings of killer
serves); Marnee Clancy (some perfect
passes and low/hard serving); Kari Toms
(very good at adjusting from setting to
defense, improved passing); Alicia Londo
and Rebecca Haight (both passed a huge
amount of target passes making it easy
for our setter to set them up for front
row attacks, served LOTS of points and
hit well at the net). We've gone from a
few pass-set-hit combos a tournament to
several every game and we're seeing a
large number of great saves, yeah TEAM
!!

Notes
and Quotes:
WOW. . . 12's Blue showed they
"have what it takes" on
Saturday at The Hoop in Vancouver during
the February power league tourney. We
moved up 3 places in the Silver
division!!! Check out our close scores
during the a.m. pool play: Canby (18-25;
24-26); Mt. Hood (25-20; 25-17); Salem
(25-22; 15-25; 8-15). Even though our
team ended up in 4th place in our pool,
we didn't slow down at all. In fact, our
1st match in bracket play against Forest
Grove was a barn burner (26-24; 19-25;
15-11), then we won in 2 close games
against MAC Jrs. (25-21; 25-19). It took
a total team effort to bring our level
of play up, which we did. Compliments go
to Alisha Bruce-Thiery for a fabulous
job at setting and serving (net digs and
a block, too); Katie Sarysz served 'em
off the court more than once, and she
improved her passing and communicating;
our opponents had to deal with Rebecca
Haight's front row attacks and tough
serves, and she also consistently calls
the ball; Alicia Londo had a terrific
day with lots of good serves and tons of
target passes (the Alicia/Alisha
pass-set-hit combo was working like a
well-oiled machine); Karee Lappe
improved her playing level by leaps and
bounds with strong serving and keeping
the ball alive using smart playing at
the net; Paige Kehrli used playing
opportunities in both back and front
court to bring up her game, and she
contributed tremendously by always
cheering on the team; Cayden Gaston
didn't let a ball touch the ground
without trying to put a touch on it, and
she always stays positive; Marnee Clancy
showed us she can serve well AND play
defense; and Kari Toms exhibited her
ability to adjust while playing
different positions throughout the day.
We've
now had a taste of what if feels like to
play better, meet goals and enjoy
winning matches, not just a few games.
Keep up the good work, BLUE! Our next
tourney is March power league where we
will continue to improve.

12's Blue competed in the Longview
tourney on Sunday, February 10th at
Cascade M.S. We started out with a bang
in our first game against Nike Air Elite
going 21-25 in the 1st game, then lost
the 2nd game 13-25; our next pool play
match against PVC-Orange was very
competitive with scores of 25-20 and
17-25; we finished up pool by dropping
both games against North Clackamas
(11-25; and ?-25, sorry, I didn't record
our score on the last game- can anyone
help me with that one?). Our 4th place
finish in pool play moved us into the
consolation bracket at Olympia M.S. and
WOW did we have a barn-burner on our
hands..... even though we were down to 7
players at that point, the girls gave it
all they had in our exciting tie-breaker
match against Athena (9-25; 25-22,
12-15). Credits go to: Alicia Londo and
Karee Lappe for serving, Rebecca Haight
for serving, passing and hitting, Cayden
Gaston for all-out hustle, passing and
digging, and Alisha Bruce-Thiery for
excellent setting and serving, Kari Toms
for good all-around play, Katie Sarysz
for improved passing and giving awesome
high-5's to coach, Paige Kehrli for a
tough ACE serve and Marnee Clancy for
digging some strong shots. We greatly
improved our communication skills by the
end of the tourney and plan to keep
getting better with every turnout. |

Notes
and Quotes:
Cowlitz 12's Blue participated in their
1st power league tournament on Saturday,
January 26, 2002 at the Hoop in
Vancouver. In our a.m. pool we played
West Metro (6-21, 5-21); Forest Grove
(12-21, 11-21); and West Valley Jrs.
(7-21, 10-21).
After a slow start in the morning, we
came back and gave a much better showing
in the p.m. pool with good serving from
Karee Lappe, Alicia Londo and Katie
Sarysz, improved defense and passing
thanks to Marnee Clancy (our Libero) and
Cayden Gaston, good all-around play from
Rebecca Haight, contributions from Kari
Toms and Paige Kehrli in the front row
and Alisha Bruce-Thiery did a good job
setting (running a 5-1 in the p.m. after
starting out with a 6-2). Our results in
the p.m. pool were: North Clackamas
(8-21, 20-22); Forest Grove (22-20 (an
exciting win!), 18-21, and 15-7); and
Rouge Valley (9-21, 17-21).
This was a huge learning opportunity as
we had only had one practice to learn
base defense and how to transition from
defense to offense (we even used the
lunch break to practice it). The girls
maintained excellent sportsmanship,
positive attitudes and kept working hard
through it all and their coaches are
proud of them. We look forward to moving
up in the standings at our next power
league. One thing the team learned for
sure, DON'T STEP OUTSIDE THE GYM WITHOUT
YOUR WARM-UPS ON (especially when it's
SNOWING) because you'll get caught!!! |
