Notes
and Quotes:
Hey everybody! First of all, my
apologies for not getting commentary
about my wonderful team on the web. No
excuses, just sincere and deep
apologies. Wow, what a team I have -
these young ladies are truly an
excellent group of athletes. Yakima, as
you all must know by now, was a blast
for the entire team. We took first in
upper division challenge bracket placing
us 7th overall. We learned a lot and
improved our play. We also learned that
we were much better than where we placed
and the girls and myself were not
satisfied at all with our place in the
tournament and have been working hard
ever since to improve on our teamwork
aspect of the game.
After
Yakima, we had almost an entire month
until our next tournament. The girls and
I filled our time with a few practices
and a long overnight party at Patrician
Inn Suites in Longview. We went
swimming, made key chains, painted toe
nails, ate some junk food, and even
managed to set a few goals for the
remainder our season. We all had a great
time.
At
our last power league, we were very
successful. We placed 2nd overall, but
most importantly we accomplished two of
our goals we set at our party. As
always, Amanda Trochim and Talia Hamer
led the team as our setters. Brittany
McCoy and Jourdyn Wilson played well at
the net, both of them getting a block
each and attacking overfeeds. Denali
Preston played very well all around.
Ainsley Uhlenkott played very well
defensively. She was nailed with a few
hard hits in a row and dug all of them
up well. Katie Wells passed up several
free balls that allowed our setters and
hitters to have some fun. Katie also
improved on the communication aspect of
the game.
Our
player of the day was Daryl Neu - she
stepped into the outside hitter position
for a sick teammate and played all
around. She was outstanding with several
kills and excellent defense. This team
continues to impress me and everyone
else who watches them. I am so happy
that our season is not over.
The
road to Davis will soon begin.

Notes
and Quotes:
Another great weekend for the Black team
this past weekend. The girls played
tough in all three pool play matches,
each match going to three games. Our
first match against PVC was a tight one
- very even both sides the entire match
but we fell short in the tie breaker.
The other two matches were up and down
but again the bump bump game was
difficult at times to combat. The ladies
held strong though, and pushed through,
winning the next two matches. This put
us in a tie breaker for first. We lost
the first game dropping us to 3rd. Oh
well. We still had an opportunity to
move up from our last power league. We
pushed easily through our next match
against North Clackamas. Then on to
Nike. Because of the incredibly long
day, we opted to just play one game to
25. We smoked them. These ladies
improved all day long. We were calling
out serving areas and the kids were
nailing them. Never in 5 years of
coaching the twelves have I ever had a
team that could hit areas on call like
they do. It's so amazing to me and
incredibly exciting. We served so well
that at one point Talia Hamer got to try
to jump serve. It missed going over the
net by an inch or two. Maybe next time.
Amanda Trochim was pushing back sets
when she could. Both she and Talia were
dumping the ball at the right time and
in the right places. Andrea DeRosier,
Daryl Neu, and Becky Nein had excellent
days serving - they were all crucial to
our success. Ainslely Uhlenkott and
Katie Wells played defense on the left
side and passed the ball well. Denali
Preston was strong all the way around -
she was a true leader on the court - her
talking really pushed us through the
day. Our stars of the day were Brittany
McCoy and Jourdyn Wilson. Brittany made
all her serves but one and played her
first time in the back row and did an
excellent job. Jourdyn Wilson had the
highlight play of the day with a huge
class A block. Only after she attacked
the net smacking down a few over feeds.
The team is really learning to work
together and understanding the game.
Great Job Ladies!! PASS SET CRUSH!!!

Notes
and Quotes:
Cowlitz Black moved from eighth place to
sixth after a long day at The Hoop on
Saturday. Again, we were victim several
times to the bump bump game that goes on
and we are having some difficulty
reacting to the quick balls over the
net. However, we did not change anything
about our game - we continued to set the
ball up. Each match, we seem to put it
together just a little better than the
previous match. Amanda Trochim, Talia
Hamer, and Daryl Neu were our top
servers for the day. Jourdyn Wilson and
Brittany McCoy both played well on the
net and seem to be getting more
comfortable on the court. Denali Preston
and Becky Nein played excellent as
outside hitters, both taking full
approaches every time they hit the ball.
( It's amazing how they are always
successful when an approach is taken).
Ainsley Uhlenkott, Andrea DeRosier, and
Katie Wells all played very well
defensively. Both middle blockers,
Jourdyn Wilson and Brittany McCoy,
played defense and made several
beautiful passes out of free balls. With
a a lot more communication and a little
more desire to not let that ball hit the
floor, we'll be well on our way to
Victory. This entire team is full of
potential volleyball stars and it's
truly exciting to see a group of young
ladies to follow in their volleyball
future.

Notes
and Quotes:
The 12's Black played in the Longview
tournament last weekend placing 2nd in
their pool and 5th overall. The morning
was a little rough getting started; we
split the match with Intercity out of
Portland - both games were very close.
The next match was pretty much a breeze
for the girls with many attempts to set
up free balls - the girls took full
advantage of that. Denali Preston was on
fire hitting everything that was set
near her. Brittany McCoy and Jourdyn
Wilson both were very aggressive at the
net slamming over feeds down. Amanda
Trochim threw us all off by tossing in a
dump here and there, keeping all of us
on our toes. Daryl Neu played excellent
and consistently on the outside all the
way around. Talia Hamer had a great day
on the court - she had a goal to talk
more and be a better leader on the floor
and she did just that, communicating
with her hitters and mixing up her sets
and even setting an occasional 10 to the
back row. The next match we split with
Yakima, smoking them the first game then
letting up a bit the second and falling
short. Our last match we moved to
Cascade to play a power league team
we've seen before in North Clackamas -
they have a few great servers but play a
lot of bump bump ball and a lot of stuff
that should be illegal but really is
just ugly. We split the first two games
then went to a third and lost a close
one. I'm not one to claim sour grapes
but the officiating was horrible and
truly had an effect on the outcome of
the match. Starting our warm up time
before the coach even entered the gym
was the first poor officiating call.
Anyway it's over now and I definitely
learned something and I hope my parents
and girls did too. I was very proud of
their play on Sunday. They were
aggressive and never let up. Most of the
points scored by the other team truly
were our errors trying to play the game
correctly.
Great
Job ladies!!!

Notes
and Quotes:
WOW!! What a great start for Cowlitz
Black - the girls won every match in
two, which was the cherry on top for all
the good things they were doing all day.
Our transition game went very well and
"pass, set, hit" was the only
concept the girls understood and
executed. Everyone contributed to the
success we had on Saturday. Katie Wells
and Ainsley Uhlenkott played well
defensively, both having a chance to
play the libero position. Talia Hamer
and Amanda Trochim both set up the
offense well and learned a little about
how to lead a volleyball team. Becky
Nein and Denali Preston played outside
and both were aggressive attacking the
ball using their approaches every time
they were set. Daryl Neu played right
side, attacking the ball and setting
when necessary. Brittany McCoy and
Jourdyn Wilson both had several kills in
the middle blocker position. Brittany
also had one block. While Jourdyn passed
up some crucial free balls that were
passed directly over after she served
the ball. All of the girls served well,
though Talia Hamer stood out with one
run of 20 serves. I was so pleased with
the performance of these young athletes.
You would have never known it was their
first tournament and for five of them
their first time ever playing organized
volleyball. Great job ladies!!!! |
