Notes
and Quotes:
Cowlitz 12's Black had an excellent and
exhausting tournament Saturday. These
girls played their hearts out, half of
the time on empty stomachs. The morning
started with one team in our pool not
showing up so we played a 3 out of 5
match in pool play. The first match we
reffed which went to 5 of course so it
was almost 10:30 before we touched a
ball and basically no food in their
bodies. We played Nike Power our first
match taking them in 5. We played very
well setting the ball up the majority of
the time and serving well. The first
time we have really played like a team
for an entire match. The next match was
against the Locos, a team that sent
every first ball over and only set it up
by accident. This is usually where we
struggle but the girls continued to play
well as a team and adjusted to the first
ball over; it did not shake them at all.
Our serves however that match had much
to be desired. Until I threw out a new
rule for our team - a lap for every
missed serve. Before I said that we had
missed 8 serves. After that 2. Amazing
what the thought of running laps did for
their concentration. We had about an
hour and a half break, plenty of time
for the girls to get rejuvenated; they
were definitely exhausted after playing
9 games in a row with only a ten minute
break. Bracket play started off a little
slow for us. Missing some crucial serves
and just moving a little slow after our
long break. We lost our first game, then
came back winning the next two. Our last
match was against Forest Grove for the
championship in the Silver Division. We
played so incredibly well I was so proud
of these young athletes. We were truly
playing volleyball. Passing, setting,
hitting, blocking, digging. We were
doing it all. We beat Forest Grove in
three. All day we got behind and the
girls pulled themselves out. That, I
think, is what impressed me the most.
Amanda Trochim and Liz Spears set
consistently for us all day, directing
traffic on the court and demanding
hustle out of their teammates. Nichole
DeSantis and Janelle Frutchey played
hard on the net, each having 10 kills
for the day. Liz and Amanda also had 1
kill each. Sarah Charette had 6 kills
from the outside and played hard
defensively. Ashlee Hanson had 5 kills
from the outside and served up her usual
killer serves that had everyone gasping
at the intensity of her serves. Chelsie
Barnes played consistent for us in the
subbing in for Ashlee in either the
front or the back row. BriAnne
Culbertson served up many crucial points
for us during pool play. Talia Hamer
came as our back up setter and did an
excellent job. She had a 3 successful
dumps and set up several attacks. My
player of the tournament had to be
Brittany Carey, our defensive
specialist. We use Brittany in the
Libero position; this kid took a beating
all day and especially during bracket
play. Her hustle and consistent passing
gave our setters and hitters
opportunities all day for great assists
and kills. Congratulations to my kids. I
was so proud of their efforts. All the
hard work in practice really paid off;
we played our game consistently, never
allowing the bump bump teams to shake
us. Great Job Cowlitz Black.
